Selected works (after "HESTER)
14 Feb, 2026
I work with female models in staged environments, creating worlds without linear logic or fixed narrative—spaces that unfold like dreams.Over the past twenty years, two photobooks have been published: NOISE (2008) and HESTER (2021). The works included in these books do not belong to two separate series, but rather form a continuous body of work, reflecting both my development and transformation, as well as the elements that have remained constant throughout my practice.HESTER brings together photographs made between 2008 and 2018. The title refers to one of the images in the book and is drawn from the character Hester in A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. I am drawn to this fictional figure for her intensity—she is extroverted, aggressive, and chaotic, yet also sensitive, loving, and magnetic. With affection, I could call all the women in my photographs “Hester.”The works submitted were created after the publication of this book, continuing along the same trajectory. The anonymous women in my images balance on a fragile threshold—between the childlike and the sensual, the vulnerable and the destructive, the playful and the tragic.
Kumi Oguro is born in Japan in 1972. Her study of photography started in London in 1996, followed by further development at Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp until 2003. Next to photography, she also experimented with video and installation in a postgraduate program, Transmedia in Brussels. Her research theme in the program was the relation between still and moving image. This subject is also treated later on in her thesis for the master course, Film studies and Image Culture at the University Antwerp in 2006. Oguro has participated in exhibitions and art/photography fairs in Europe, USA, Canada and Japan. She created images for the production of the Flemish Opera. Her images have been used for program books including Opra national de Paris and Festival D'Aix-en-Provence and became covers of a couple of novels. Her first book NOISE was published by Le caillou bleu (Brussels) in 2008. Her second book HESTER was published by Stockmans Art Books (Duffel, Belgium) in September 2021. This book was shortlisted for Belfast Photo Festival 2022. She lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium since 1999.
