Rotting from Within

15 Jan, 2025

Rotting from Within refers to a feeling I describe as the unearthing of my father, the generational trauma that exists within the patriarchs of my family and subsequently the task of uncovering my own self amidst the things passed down. It’s a body of work that was made surrounding my father, spanning the ten years I made my reconnaissance with him beginning in 2014, after his incarceration for selling drugs and attempted murder. Between Berlin and Turkey, it deals with my struggle to define him as a father and human, process the events that led to his life path and search for the places where I can attempt reconciliation.

About the photographer

Abdulhamid Kircher

Abdulhamid Kircher (b. 1996) is an artist from Queens, New York. He was born in Berlin to German and Turkish parents, and immigrated with his mother to the United States at the age of eight. His work is a living archive of place and people, as it is also a dedication to the language of photography, the mechanics and aesthetic possibilities of the form. Through his devotion to classical forms of image making and the radical experimentation required for each of his subjects, his process bridges the idea between document and narrative. He received his BA in Culture and Media from The New School in 2018 and his MFA in Visual Arts from the University of California San Diego in 2022. Abdul currently lives and works between Berlin and Los Angeles.
