ONIRONAUTICA

22 Feb, 2024

“Onironautica,” originating from the Greek words 'Ὄνειρος' (dream) and 'ναύτης' (sailor), encapsulates the art of delving into dreams. This project aims to depict 'lucid dreams,' where dreamers navigate their subconscious with conscious awareness. The term 'lucid dream' was introduced by Dutch psychiatrist Frederik van Eeden in 1913, marking a pivotal moment in dream research. His meticulous documentation of significant dreams in a diary ignited cross-disciplinary inquiries. Drawing inspiration from van Eeden's pioneering spirit, I embarked on a photographic expedition to capture the essence of lucid dreams, aiming to preserve nuances—details, sensations, memories, and visions—within heightened dream consciousness.

About the photographer

ludovica de santis

Ludovica De Santis was born in Rome in May 1991. Always interested in the visual arts, she began cultivating a love for photography and cinema from a young age. She studied in Rome and moved to Paris in 2011. She graduated in Art History with a specialization in film criticism. Meanwhile, she worked as an editing assistant and photographer for various documentary and film productions. Her first photography exhibition took place in 2011 at the ROA Gallery in London. Photography has been an integral part of the artist's creative journey since the beginning, and in 2013, she decided to make it her primary means of expression. She delved into the world of analog photography and embarked on a path that encompassed various photographic approaches, from documentary to more intimate styles, and even fine art. Ludovica De Santis's work has been exhibited in cities such as Paris, Berlin, London, Dublin, Budapest, Rome, Turin, Marseille, Zurich, and has been featured in many magazines in the field. Her series "Untitled" has been exhibited in Locarno (La Rada), Rome (Loosenart), Berlin (Safelight & Safelight Paper), Munich (Der Grief), and Amsterdam (Haute Photographie). In 2021, she participated as a juror in the Biennale di Fotografia Femminile in Mantua, and in 2022, she won the first prize for digital manipulation techniques at the Julia_margareth Foundation. In 2023, she made her debut in the world of photographic publishing with "Zagriz," a photobook published by Altana in Milan. In the same year, she was selected as one of the best talents by Fresh Eyes, managed by GUP Magazine.
