Old Highway 51

14 Feb, 2026

«My work focuses on a region of southern Louisiana that is projected to be completely underwater by the year 2050. Central to this project is Old Highway 51, a now-flood-prone road that runs parallel to the newly elevated Highway 51. To me, Old Highway 51 stands as a symbol of a community that will suffer the effects of rising sea levels far earlier than many others, as this region is already situated below sea level. Using research data and satellite imagery from NASA, predictions indicate that this area will be fully submerged within the next 25 years. I am committed to documenting this landscape as a form of evidence, a visual archive that highlights the consequences of the political decisions we make now, in 2025. These photographs are intended to speak to future generations, reflecting on the self-sabotaging political climate of our time. Over the coming year, I plan to deepen my research into the location, its historical context, and the experiences of the local community, whom I hope to involve in the project."
