"Insh?, meaning 'impression' in English, is exactly that - an impressionistic visual journey through Japan. I made two trips of three weeks each in late Spring of 2023 and 2024 and travelled solo with my camera following my instincts as I went. The project is ongoing and I am scheduled to return in April, 2025 for another three weeks to hopefully finish the project. My aim is to produce a book of the work. From the outset my idea for this project was try and absorb as much of what about Japanese culture and history and combine it with my own instinctive impression of the country. I always wanted variety to be part of the process but very quicly I felt it needed to be the driving force of the project - to use both colour and black and white stock, shoot highly composed images with abstract, the deeply serene and disciplined with the intensely busy and populated and then ultimately post-produce and print in different ways all to illustrate the dynamic and unique contrasts that somehow co-exist in contemporary Japanese society. In these 24 images, I am showing only a small cross section of the work to date."
