Icebreaker
19 Jan, 2025
"Icebreaker" is a visual exploration into the fragile world of snow and ice. Through the inovative use of custom aerial lighting rigs flown at night, Liam casts frozen landscapes in a dramatic new light, uncovering the hidden beauty of our cryosphere, whilst illuminating the tangible impacts of climate change. With 2025 being the UN International Year of Glacier's Preservation, now is the perfect time for climate change to be brought to the forefront of global conversations, and "Icebreaker" aims to ignite this dialogue through the power of fine art.
"Liam Man is a photographer whose work bridges the gap between art and advocacy. A specialist in the art of light-painting, he is redefining what landscape photography can be. Surreal impressions of familiar places by meticulously shaping the light that illuminates them. His work has garnered international recognition, including being awarded "Open Photographer of the Year" at the World Photography Awards 2024. Liam’s current project, Icebreaker, sheds light—both literally and figuratively—on the cryosphere. From the grand glaciers of Patagonia to the frozen forests of Finland, this series captures the intricate details and breathtaking scale of polar and alpine landscapes. Developed in support of the UN International Year of Glacier Preservation, Icebreaker not only inspires awe but also advocates for action, emphasizing the critical role of these ecosystems in regulating our climate. His work stands in deliberate opposition to the current landscape of photography, which often prioritizes quick, consumable images designed for social media and influencer-driven narratives. Rather than treating the environment as a consumable backdrop for fleeting moments of self-promotion, he strives to place the natural world at the center of his compositions, celebrating their beauty, complexity, and fragility.
