Hell

14 Feb, 2026

Hell is a body of work created from and about my decades-long reoccurring depression. This work is the outcome of time spent very intentionally processing grief and trauma and it serves to relate through emotive imagery rather than direct narrative. I set out to find or stage each photograph, often spending periods of time traveling alone, working slowly and intuitively with a 4x5. The result is a non-linear story that seeks to resolve nothing and cure nothing. Instead, I investigate the liminal spaces of the psyche with vulnerability, and offer myself to play the main character in my own story. Its current format is individual photographs and a 123 page book edit.

About the photographer

Nikki Greene

Nikki Greene is an artist based in San Francisco, California, with a commitment to filmic photography, written word, archival work, and installation. At the heart of her practice is a deep-rooted interest in non-linear storytelling and documentation. Her practice is centered on the fluidity of memory and the illusory nature of photography to express the complexities of personal and collective histories. With an emphasis on the role of art as a means to process experience, her projects range from documenting cattle ranchers in Wyoming, to portraits of a women’s mask theater group in Virginia, to deeply personal reflections and narratives. Nikki Greene has exhibited locally and internationally. She recently took part of the AFMPII - Annual Fotofilmic Mentoring Program (BC, Paris) for 2024/2025 where she was supported by her mentors Elisa Medde, Christian Patterson and Stacy Kranitz. In 2022, she was invited to attend Charcoal Book Club’s Chico Portfolio Review (Montana). In 2019, she held residencies at Kala Art Institute Artist-in-Residence Program (Berkeley, CA) and Jentel Artist Residency (Wyoming). In 2019, She held solo photography shows for her self-published book Zero Days Left at Book & Job Gallery (San Francisco, CA) and at 22 Ludlow (NYC).
