Asking for the Sun

14 Feb, 2026

This photographic essay approaches the feeling of a Nostalgia for the present. The reference to this term stems from the state of being helplessly confronted with one's own disorientation within the here and now. I spend more time reflecting on what was then on what is or what could be. This emotional state is fluctuating and by no means continuous, since the sensitivity of nostalgic feelings, in part, also depends on the circumstances of the present. My nostalgic feelings apply to a time of carelessness and being alone in a foreign country, they are dedicated to what is experienced but also to memories that were never experienced themselves but could have been made. To chase the feeling of experiencing a time again which has not yet passed, in the same way is a futile endeavour, to put together memories that one never experienced is purely imaginative. Most of the photographic works are neither time nor place bound, as this essay unfolds in its emotional layers of Images that are used as verses are used in poetry. Working together, circling around each other, building up a narrative to let us do the most existential thing humans can do: to feel something.

About the photographer

Steven Natusch

Steven Natusch (*1993 born in Berlin) is an artist who lives and works in Dortmund, Germany. He is currently studying photography (MA) at the FH Dortmund. In his work, he seeks to use photographic images as a visual-lyrical language that primarily negotiates emotional states, existential questions, and elemental experiences. In his photographs, which are usually neither time nor place bound, his work moves non-linearly through worlds of magical realism to create a state of concern. His photographic works have been shown at the Rencontres d'Arles, among others, he was nominated for the Portfolio Prize of the Imago Lisboa Photo Festival 2021 and was nominated for the Kassel Dummy Award 2022. In this year, he was also selected by GUP Magazine for FRESH EYES as one of the top 100 emerging photographers of Europe.
