In an opaque and oppressive China, monitored by its millions of cameras, Yan, Taro, Toddy, Sam and the others do what they can. Homosexuality is no longer considered a disease and is legal. They enjoy a respite; in 2019, homosexuals are not seen as the main enemy. The regime’s rhetoric, subtle, does not openly oppose LGBT rights. So, the new generation is emerging, in search of freedom. In the background: the night, with its crooked bars and darkness conducive to camouflage, confidences and forgetting. They dare to believe, they strive to believe, they would like to “live”. Anonymity is the rule, they immerse themselves in it, the grip seems to loosen. They get intoxicated, they offer themselves, they abandon themselves. Then they take a step back, a barrier, real or imagined, suddenly comes down. Reality catches up, filling lives with fears and contradictions. Some escape to Taiwan for gay pride. The most daring will put on a persona, at their own risk. They will try to cope, still dreaming of elsewhere. They have few illusions, quickly broken by real life. For alas, the Chinese regime continues to harden. So they stay remain silence, they comply. Or they flee.

About the photographer

Francois Silvestre de Sacy

Images and shooting have always been in my head. About 8 years ago, I decided to give it a try and embark on a more serious photographic journey. I trained at EFET Photographie school, in Paris, and quickly started working for festivals, film shootings, events, along with my translation work, and maturing my photo process. My photographic practice was born in the street. It still focuses on the exploration of public space, but evolved towards a more documentary approach based on peoples life and struggles, with a personal and intimate dimension increasingly present. Over the last year, I worked on a series about the mourning of my father, and Im now starting a project about homosexuality and religious beliefs/practices. Since 2010, my work has been showcased in various festivals: Zoom Photo Festival (Canada), Queer Festival Heidelberg (Germany), Head On Photo Festival (Australia), StreetProjections (Germany), Les Nuits photographiques de Pierrevert (screening, France), Les chemins de photos (France), Les Nuits Photo (France), Les Nuits Photo (screening, France), Festival Impulse (France).
